BIG STAR STORY FAMILY TREE

You may have heard about a Kickstarter campaign offering a limited edition, remastered, signed and numbered high-end print of the Big Star Story family tree created at Rykodisc back in 1991 (good lord!).

The remastered version faithfully reproduces the original work on luxurious unfolded stock. There are three versions being offered;

1) the primary edition on white stock (as the original was, but this time the paper is better) limited to 150 copies

2) bone colored stock variant (limited to 25 copies)

3) a tan version, with hand-drawn remarques of local Memphis landmarks (also limited to 25 copies)

Unlike typical Kickstarters, there’s no risk here. The prints have already been made, all the mailing supplies are in-house and ready to be shipped as soon as the campaign ends.

The reason for crowdfunding is the Rykobook. I’ve been working omn the damn thing for TEN YEARS and want to make it exactly the way I want it (and I think you’ll want it!), from editing to manufacturing. A traditional publisher would impose their editors (I have an editor, but based on horror-stories I’ve heard from rock writer friends, I don’t want a fresh-out-of-college jr editor asking why I’m not writing about vinyl because it’s “hot right now”). Also the packaging I’m envisioning is elaborate (and not cheap).

By running the Big Star print as a Kickstater, I’m probably giving up money that I don’t need to, but I’ll hopefully be trading that for knowledge about working within the crowdfunding arena for the Rykobook launch.

This supergroup was formed when Matt Sorum (The Cult, Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver) called Steve Jones (Sex Pistols, The Professionals) to play in a pickup band for a benefit at the Notorious Viper Room. The group was rounded out by other a-listers, Duff McKagan (The Fartz, GnR, Velvet Revolver) and John Taylor (Duran Duran, The Power Station). Their mash-up of punk and gritty rock sensibilities was a smash and within a few months they’d signed a million dollar deal. Enlisting Jerry Harrison (Modern Lovers, Talking Heads) to Produce, they made this explosive album of largely Steve Jones originals, that hearken back to his best work. Includes the original 12 song album, plus 4 bonus tracks, including their cover of Duran’s Planet Earth”!

15 tracks of raw punk / rock / glam from a great lost band of the early 90’s. Includes all 7 tracks they released before imploding, including their NME Single Of The Week “Destined To Be Free.” The music is great and the band’s story - explained in detail in a 24 page booklet with photos - is incredible!
